July 2024 Book Selection:

This July’s choice of book by the Solist Book Club for Inspiration is Alawiyya Sobh, the Lebanese author’s novel Rejoice My Heart(ifrah ya albi).
Amidst the grim circumstances our countries are going through, we have opted to read something that resonates with our collective memory.

The novel Rejoice My Heart is set in northern Lebanon, in a quaint town where Christians and Muslims have coexisted for ever, until the extreme radical Takfiri cults started to ascend and religious affiliation crimes rose.

We trace the life of the talented musician Ghassan who chooses to immigrate after a tragic incident befalls his family.
Alawiyya Sobh takes us on a journey to the self, through fleeing the pains and norms of the past.
We, along with the author, question the clash/ and the merge of cultures, and the purpose of our existence in countries that agonize and bleed continuously. 

This novel is not an open window to the defeats of homelands, but to the personal blows one reaps  as a result of society’s defeats.
This is such a pleasant and profound read for the summer vacation.
